MAUI, HAWAII, page 2

This old shack was on the property I lived on in Paia. The day after I painted this, it was

bulldozed. Paia is a really nice town. Only one street light. On the way to market, I would pass the Tibetian Buddhist Center. On Sundays I would enjoy listening to

Lama Tenzin teach us about Buddhism (even though I am a Catholic). He would

chant when we did the Chenrezig Puja. His voice was incredible. I would do my

shopping at Mana Foods and on the way back pick up some fragrant plumeria

flowers to put on my home alter.

This is what Makena Beach looked like in 1964 when I got to Maui. Not too many people here then. Now it's like Coney Island with all the big hotels. I'm so glad that

people are able to come to Maui, even for a visit. People save their whole lives just

for two weeks here. I know it's worth it because there's just something about Maui.

The Hawaiians always say: "Maui No Ka Oi". It means, Maui is the best. It sure is!

I could walk to Paia Bay when I lived on Melia Place. It was a short walk down the hill.

Baldwin Park Beach is just beyond the little beach where I painted this view of the

North West Shore of Maui. It's a bit secluded. Some people just swim there nude.

The sand is clean and the waves are intoxicating. It's a great place to body surf.
