Below is a series of videos I recently
edited from a tape I made in August 1985
from a Haleakala Crater hike
I made with a few friends.
I've added some of my original music,
poetry and prayers to the clips.

Haleakala 1: There Is a Friend
In this first video of the series, I'm standing
on the rim of the volcano facing
West Maui Mtns with my friend David.
You can see the "bottleneck"
of Maui from Kihei to Kahului.
You can also see the interior of the crater
which is still in blue shadow at that
time of day. Then we start down
Sliding Sands Trail, 8,000 feet
to the floor of the Crater.
You can see the clouds pouring in through
the Ko'olau Gap filling the basin like
cotton candy.
At the bottom, we stay watching
Freitas guys bring their group
for the day down on horses.
Some of the footage on this first video
got a little mangled over time.
I had to edit out alot of fabulous footage,
but the series wouldn't make sense
without the opening shots before
going into the crater.
I hope my song THERE IS A FRIEND
makes up for the poor condition of the
vhs tape. The other clips are perfect
and without damage, so you wont be
subjected to that again in this series.

Haleakala Crater 2: Hail Mary
This prayer video is the 2nd in this series.
We began walking now thru the basin
and have just passed the path
that leads to Holua Cabin.
It's about a ten mile hike from
Sliding Sands Trail and Ko'olau Gap to
Paliku Cabin and Kaupo Gap.
I am literally standing in the clouds in
this video. The colors and freshness of
the air so sweet are invigorating and
make one pause, to thank
whatever God there is,
for the experience of witnessing
such a profound and living beauty, as is
Haleakala Crater.
One can hear music in the air.

Haleakala Crater 3: PACHAMAMA SAYS...!
In this third video in the series, we're still
walking thru the volcano floor, on our way to
Paliku Cabin and Kaupo Gap.
At the end of the video
in the far right background
you can see the immense clouds
pouring into the Crater thru Kaupo Gap.
I put my song Pachamama Says...! with it.
To the Quechua Natives of Peru,
Pachamama represents Mother Earth.
Hope you're enjoying the videos.
More to come soon.

Haleakala Crater 4: Who Am I?
Well we made it to Paliku Cabin just before dusk.
We hiked ten miles from the sparsely vegetated
Sliding Sands Trail, all the way to the lush
pastures of the rain forest and Kaupo Gap.
Being there makes one aware and calm,
all burdens laid aside and forgotten,
only the fragrance of life, and richness of colors
invade the psyche. One is free.
Civilization doesn't exist.
Polution is a bad dream.
One awakens to the I Am,
finds comfort in natural things
and is reborne.

Haleakala Crater 5: Our Father
This 5th video in the series is one of my favorite segments of the original tape. I'm so glad to be
able to share it with you. I hope it touches
your heart and you watch it now and then
and say the Our Father prayer yourself
for someone who needs Our Father's wisdom.
Even if you're not into praying or meditation,
I'm sure you'll love seeing the Nene Geese
fooling around in front of Paliku Cabin.
In this video, morning has come to the Crater
and Paliku Cabin. The sunrize spills over
the Pali into the Crater, and a beautiful
new day begins.

Hang on, the journey's not over yet.
We're headed down Kaupo Gap after
the Ceremony in the next segments of this series.

In this 6th video in the series,
we've left the cabin. In the openning shots
I turn back and zoom into the far distance
where you can just make out the cabin
nestled in among the trees.
David and I perform a little ceremony
inside the pyramid and plant a crystal.
Then David leaves to hike out
Switchback Trail where his car is parked.
I stay as I intend to hike down
Kaupo Gap.
This video is 8 1/2 minutes long and
takes 20-25 minutes to open with Dial-up.
I did edit 45 minutes out to keep it short.
Even though, I hope you'll hang in for
the Ceremony with David and me.
I didn't bring the tripod into the Crater
cuz we were already loaded down
with the pyramid, alter, ceremonial dress etc.
So when we propped the camcorder up
on the rocks, we didn't know it then,
but it was having a hard time focusing
and the lens was making noise.
Remember in 1985 the State of the Art
in camcorders was not as sophisticated
as it is today.
Although these videos are not
professionally produced, I do hope
they lift your heart to always caring
about this Earth and all the living beings.
Activate your caring by speaking out
and signing petitions to pass bills
that protect wildlife, earth, sea and sky.
Hang on now, we're headed down
Kaupo Gap and a great adventure.
